In order to create a Personal Web Page you will require:

  • A Spillway Communications Internet account with a Spillway Communications e-mail address
  • The text and graphic files you want to combine into your Page
  • The ability to write HTML (hypertext markup language) or someone who knows HTML who can help you.

Uploading Your Files

In order to upload files to your personal webspace at Spillway Communications use an FTP program such as:

Connect using the following information:

  • Host Name: spillwaycable.com
  • Username: The full primary e-mail address of your Spillway Communications account (ie. jdoe@spillwaycable.com).
  • Password: The password you use to check your primary Spillway Communications e-mail address.

Note: Your home directory and webspace will not exist until after the first time you login via FTP.

Note: File uploads are via FTP only ("HTTP PUT" is not supported).

Note: The web server is case sensitive, so name your files and write your links accordingly.

Note for advanced users: ".htaccess" files are not supported.

The web server will look for a default home page in the following order (these names are case sensitive):

  • index.htm
  • index.html

Viewing Your Personal Web Site

The URL for a personal Web Page at Spillway Communications is in the format of:

http://spillwaycable.com/~username/

Note: If your primary e-mail address changes, the URL will change as well.

Definitions

Storage: This is the amount of hard drive space your files take up. 20 Megabytes of free storage is available for your personal web site (attached to the primary e-mail address on your Spillway Communications Internet account). If you require more than 20 Megabytes of storage, please contact your cable company for information about upgrading your account.

Kilobytes (KB)
1 KB = 1,024 bytes

Megabytes (MB)
1 MB = 1,024 kilobytes

Research indicates that the average web page is about 50 kilobytes (KB) in size (this page is approximately 150 KB). The general consensus is that 1 Megabyte (MB) equals about 100 pages of plain text. Therefore, 20 MB gives you the space to create approximately 500 pages of text (or 35 pages with a mixture of graphics and text like this one). Keep in mind, the number, size, and quality of the graphics you include on your web site will drastically alter the amount of space you take up.
